Christmas brings joy and happiness to all of us, but along comes stress and pressure, testing us mentally and physically and continuing as post-holiday depression. Here are some tips to help you navigate through your emotions this holiday season so you can focus on enjoying this wonderful time of the year.
• When you wake up, sit on the bed for a few minutes, close your eyes, and visualize what the day holds for you and how you want to get through it. Knowing how you will act will help keep your mind calm, leaving less stress on the body.
• Be mindful of every work or activity you do during the holidays, whether it’s shopping, planning dinner or going to a friend’s house; understand that these events are in the present and enjoy every moment. Do one thing at a time and be aware of your responses; if it helps, make a quick note of your emotions while embracing these beautiful moments.
• Showing gratitude will boost your mood. Of course, Christmas time is a perfect time to express your appreciation. Add a positive vibe by communicating the same to your family and friends.
• Good food and drinks are on the menu! But be aware of how much you are drinking and eating. Remember, moderation is the key. Avoid overeating or drinking; keeping your body light will keep your mind at ease. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
• Don’t lose your sleep! make sure to get adequate rest. A good night’s sleep not only does wonders for your beauty but also helps you remain calm throughout the holiday season.
• If you are alone or feeling lonely, which, unfortunately, some of us are going to be! Indulge in the joy of giving, and try to help people in need or volunteer at your local soup kitchen or food bank. Do not sit at home and watch TV; that will only make you feel more lonely. Stay active! Go for a walk, check out some decorations, and get fresh air.
• If you are still not in the mood to enjoy the Christmas spirit and holiday! It’s okay! Relax, give yourself some space, read a book, listen to music, go to the gym, and do an activity that will make you feel positive.
Focusing on yourself and keeping your emotional, physical and social well-being in check will help you control your stress and anxiety this holiday season. Most importantly, acknowledging that Christmas and holidays bring with them feelings of anxiety and stress is the first step in taking the right action to maintain a healthy mental state.
